KIMBERLEY Harriers, a wellknown running club established in 1969 and renowned for their commitment to community service, has embarked on a mission to fight hunger in the city.

Under the banner of ‘Run Against Hunger’, the club raised funds and collected food donations for Kimberley Meals on Wheels, a local organisation that provides meals to 4,000 people each day from Monday to Friday.

Kimberley Harriers Running Club has always believed in the power of running to bring people together, and this year marks the fourth consecutive year that they have chosen to support Meals on Wheels. The club’s secretary, Ria Janse van Vuuren, expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to assist such a worthy cause.

“It’s truly heart-warming to see the Kimberley community come together to support Meals on Wheels. Our running club is honoured to be a part of this remarkable initiative. We believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious meals and we are committed to doing our part to make that a reality,” said Janse van Vuuren.

As part of their fund-raising efforts, Harriers reached out to the community for donations. Their hard work paid off as they received food donations, as well as raising a total of R1 480 in donations. With this amount, they plan to purchase additional food supplies for Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels has been a vital lifeline for the Kimberley community, particularly for those facing financial constraints or limited access to food resources. The organisation’s dedicated volunteers work diligently to prepare and deliver meals to individuals who may be unable to cook or go out to buy groceries themselves.

Kimberley Harriers’ ‘Run Against Hunger’ campaign in support of Meals on Wheels showcases the power of community involvement in addressing social issues. By combining their love for running with charitable work, the club has exemplified the spirit of unity and generosity.

Harriers and Meals on Wheels are encouraging everyone in the community to join their cause. Whether through financial contributions, food donations, or volunteer work, each person’s support can make a significant difference in alleviating hunger in Kimberley.

“A heartfelt thank you to all the incredible supporters of our World Hunger Day initiative,” said Kimberley Harriers club captain Roshelle Jacobs.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude for each donation received at our special dropand-go gazebo this past Saturday. Your support and generosity have made a profound impact, giving hope and nourishment to those in need. Once again, we express our deepest appreciation to each one of you who contributed to this important cause.”

Meals on Wheels finance director Thomas Chisveto added that the donation will also contribute towards providing more meals to the community of Danielskuil, where the local branch has been struggling with fewer resources and has been severely affected by rising food prices.

“We would like to thank everyone that contributed towards making this initiative a success, especially the Kimberley Harriers Running Club and the City of Kimberley. We appeal to society to help us and help others in need, especially during this winter season,” said Chisveto.
