Why is it called archery?

Archery is the practice of using a bow to shoot arrows. The word comes from the Latin arcus, meaning ‘bow’. Historically, archery was used for hunting and combat, having been invented in the late Paleolithic or early Mesolithic periods.

Danelle Wentzel became the first South African archer to win a stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in history. She took the final by three points.

Marie-louise Vermeulen, a Physical Sciences teacher at The Settlers High School in Bellville, is the South African Champion for Outdoor World Archery.

Through archery practise children learn to be self-motivated, focussed and patient. It also leads to improved coordination and increased confidence from mastering a new skill and provides an excellent opportunity to teach sportsmanship.

The Bushmen and Archery

In 2019 there was 100,000 Bushmen in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Angola. As a largely hunter-gatherer population, they are synonymous with bow and arrow hunting. The current record with an English longbow is 412.82 m, shot by Jószef Mónus from Hungary in 2017, while Ivar Malde from Norway achieved 566.83 m with a Turkish composite bow in 2019 What is a missed shot called in archery? A missed shot is recorded as an “M”. It counts as zero points. Center Bulls-eye is recorded as an “X”. It counts as ten points. If an arrow pierces a dividing line on a target the score is awarded to the higher score.

Stutzman is now regarded as one of the best archers in the world, and he has no arms. He holds the Guinness World Record for farthest, most accurate shot. He also won a silver medal in the 2012 London Paralympic games. Stutzman represented the United States as part of the 2016 USA Paralympic team.
