Cape sides have a mountain

To climb against PSL’S top two

MATTHEW MARCUS IN CAPE TOWN

CAPE football’s miserable PSL December looks set to continue this weekend.

Struggling Cape Town City go to high-riding Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch host champions and runaway league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Such is the difference in-form between the Kaapse teams and the top two in the league, that I won’t be giving them a chance to even get a point.

But stranger things have happened.

Starting with City’s issues, I’m getting a terrible sense of déjà vu about their problems.

Under both Benni Mccarthy and Jan Olde Riekerink, the team also dropped off in confidence once they started to concede silly goals. Current coach Eric Tinkler took over towards the end of last season and spent the entire pre-season trying to sort out their structural problems in their defence.

But they are still being caught out there. Due to City’s attacking style of play, there is always more risk of conceding.

City will, obviously, have to sort that out, but against Chiefs and probably for the next four games until the Christmas recess, you can expect a more compact side.

Stellies, for their part, might also need a temporary rebrand. Four games without a win means they have lost second place and their unbeaten start to the season. Built on a solid defence and a lighting-quick counter, Stellies looked to expand their play more. And it hasn’t worked so lekker for them.

They are capable of landing a sucker punch against Downs this week, but to accomplish that they will have to bring their A-game.
