City residents ecstatic to see snow

BOIPELO MERE STAFF REPORTER

MANY Kimberley residents were ecstatic to experience 20 minutes of snowflakes yesterday morning.

Kimberley and surrounds were part of several areas in the Northern Cape where snow started falling just after 8.30am yesterday.

The weather forecast had warned earlier this week of a severe cold front moving over the Province.

The South African Weather Service issued a warning of snow and cold weather over the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Gauteng.

For many Kimberley residents, yesterday was their first experience of snow.

Greenpoint was reported to have been the area that experienced the longest period of snowflakes falling yesterday. The snow started falling just after 8am and lasted until around 9.30am.

The residents, however, did not seem to show the same amount of excitement as their Galeshewe counterparts, where parents and children started “playing” outside in the falling snow.

The rest of Kimberley, including Florianville, Roodepan, the CBD, Colville, Riviera, Phutanang and Club 2000, started experiencing the snow at around 9am, for about 30 minutes.

A Galeshewe resident, Mapitso Mohapi, expressed her great excitement of feeling the snow on her hands and face for the first time in her life.

“It was so amazing that I went out to play with the children in the morning,” said Mohapi.

She added that she has never experienced anything of this sort in Kimberley.

“I was sitting inside the house when I heard a different kind of drizzling on the roof and checked through the window. I saw white fluffy stuff and knew that it was

not hail. I shouted to everyone out of excitement and ran outside to play,” she laughed.

There she was met by other excited adults and children running around and screaming in the street, enjoying the experience.

Although there was enough snow to build a snowman, Mohapi said she was still “very grateful for the experience”.

Simphiwe Dikgetsi from Phutanang said he was woken by his excited children, who begged him to be allowed to go and play outside.

“I was a bit sceptical as I am afraid of them getting sick just in time for schools reopening on Monday, but I allowed them to go,” said Dikgetsi with a chuckle.

“It was a good experience for them too. I just wished there was more snow to build more exciting memories.”

Sally-anne Poolman from Florianville said she woke to the noise of her dog who wanted to escape the cold and get into the house.

“I was letting the dog inside when I saw the beautiful site,” said Poolman. “It first felt like a dream until I came to my senses that, yes, indeed it was snowing.

“It was so beautiful that I had to rush for my phone to take pictures and videos.

Gloria Sewedi said she was at work when the snow started to fall.

Luckily we were already warmly dressed in order to play in the snow,” said a beaming Sewedi.
